The Children of Lake Wobegon – Introduction

I hail from the land of 10,000 lakes, and all of my extended family does, too. In fact, we – my sister, cousins, parents, uncles, aunts, grandparents, and so on – can trace a strong line (let alone annual pilgrimages) to an area where a fictional town was placed in a very real Stearns County, Minnesota.

When you read the name of your cousins’ small hometown in a national bestseller, and that same hometown is the neighboring borough of a fictional little place in which this whole real region takes pride, then it’s easy to see why so much of what Garrison Keillor made up was oddly and Incredibly familiar.

This is, I hope, the first of many installments of a story inspired about this place where the women are strong, the men are good looking, and the children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren navigate this brave new world with the above-average-wits of a decedent of this Wobegon way of life.
